Summer 2017

Even though I’m sad to say we’re not going on another two month extravaganza across tens of countries like our last two summers, I am so excited to be heading to Sri Lanka this June.

It has been a top bucket list contender for close to a decade to visit the sub continent and I am over the moon that finally I’m getting to go.

We’re heading first to Colombo then to Galle for some incredible beaches. From there we head to Udawalawe National Park to safari, then onto Ella in the mountains. From there we head to the city of Kandy which we plan on using as a base to visit Sigiriya and the Highlands.

I use the word ‘we’ a lot, but in fact I’ve just planned the entire trip and Paul is just along for the ride.

If you have any recommendations of what to see or do in any of these places please let me know!

  1. Be sure and see Dhambullah when you’re in the central highlands. Nicknamed the “Cloud Caves,” these caves circle a mid-size mountain and contain multitudes of paintings and sculptural representations of Buddha and his Bodhisattvas. the site is not far from Siguriya, which was one of my favorite places in all of Sri Lanka.

Also, Polonnaruwa merits a visit, as does Anuradhapura. Also, if you can get to a tea plantation, do. The train ride from kandy to Eliya Nuwara is drop-dead gorgeous.

  2. Sri Lanka is awesome! Your itinerary sounds spot on, on your way up to Nuwarya Elia your driver will take you to a tea plantation, make sure you’ve got some long sleeves!

  3. Sri Lanka is great! I was there a couple of years ago. In Ella I highly recommend staying in the Waterfalls Homestay. The Australian couple who own it are extremely helpful and welcoming, and every night they cook a Sri Lankan meal which all of the guests share around a big table. It’s some of the best food we had during our stay! http://waterfalls-guesthouse-ella.com/
