St Andrews, ScotlandAfter two years of living in St Andrews, I can honestly say there’s not a bad restaurant in the town. I know this sounds a little out there, but it is so true. Blackhorn is on Church Street, between Market and South Streets. It’s pretty unassuming from both inside and out, but the food is so incredibly good. The huge windows at the front make the entire space bright, and the cattle decor runs through the entire dining area. There’s also an outdoor eating area in the back for smokers, or if it’s too busy inside – which is often, particularly during term time.
I want to start by saying it’s so much more than a fast food restaurant. Although most people order burgers and chips, their menu is unbelievably good. Locally sourced beef and ales, paninis with goats cheese and cranberry, chicken and avocado salads dressed in the most incredible sauce and fresh milkshakes. It is so good. Costing about £10 for a burger, chips and milkshake or cheaper with a regular drink, it’s really reasonably priced, too.
If you’re looking for a burger in St Andrews, this place wins hands down. Both the beef and chicken burgers are on another level to any other place in town. The Blackhorn Burger is beef with Blackhorn sauce, which I can only describe as a Big Mac sauce, but better. The Blackhorn Hot Chick is a chicken breast with lettuce, tomato, harissa and harissa mayo. Harissa is usually found in North African and the Middle Eastern dishes, but it works so well on a chicken burger. It’s spicy and a little sweet, and the mayo makes it creamy and so good for dipping chips into or as a salad dressing. Most of the burgers come with the option to double up, too.
Their in-shop made chunky fries, sweet potato fries and onion rings are really seasoned to perfection, fluffy on the inside and rough on the out. The restaurants handmade shakes range from vanilla to lemon meringue pie, as do their sundaes.
They also offer a ton of salads, wraps and hot dogs and if the burgers, and queues, are anything to go by, they’re also great.
