New York City, NY

In August of last year, I visited the United States for the first time in my life. My mother is from NYC, so I’ve been curious and pretty desperate to visit ever since I was a little girl. Reality bore no comparison to expectation. It was the perfect combination of architecture, fashion and open spaces that I love so much. Central Park possessed views unlike anything I’ve ever experienced; the beauty of a Scottish park with skyscrapers towering over the treetops. The people were amazing – from the group of guys I danced with to Beyonce on the Staten Island Ferry to the hostel workers – everybody was so helpful, and very amused by my accent. I visited Canarsie in Brooklyn where my mother grew up, ate authentic Italian pizza and rode the Cyclone at Coney Island. It was the best trip of my entire life. The shopping was out of this world – my personal favourite spot was 34th Street. Despite my borderline idiotic fear of heights we went to the top of the Empire State Building, it was breathtaking.

Super excited to be returning here in a couple of weeks with my mum!

  1. I am so glad that you were able to visit NYC! I am even more thrilled that you were able to do and see so much – even getting out the the boros and visiting where your mom is from. How exciting is that?!?!? Bravo to you! I was born, raised and lived in NYC until two years ago when I moved to Miami, Florida – it is no match for NYC.

    1. All the popular things like the Empire State and Times Square are amazing – then the Staten Island Ferry at night lets you see the city all lit up and the Statue of Liberty (plus the ferry is free)! Try find some good local restaurants to try out in Chinatown and Little Italy, the shopping on 34th Street is out of this world and so is Soho! If you get a chance go see the Brooklyn Bridge and walk over it – the view of Manhattan from Brooklyn Park is amazing and there’s lots of galleries/ shops/ places to eat!

  2. Great post. My mum and dad have this morning just got back from NYC – and it seems all they did was SHOP! So you were right about the shopping 😉 For me Top of the Rock is better value than the Empire State Building or Statue of Liberty, but it’s all down to personal preference.

  3. I always find it amusing that people love NYC. As a native New Yorker I’m always worried people will think the city is disgusting because it is filled with a lot of trash, dirt and grime. That’s not to say I don’t love or appreciate where I come from but it’s hard to look at it through a different perspective. I think with all of its faults New York City is magical and since I haven’t explored it like a tourist until the past year I have been surprised at what I have seen and experienced. The Brooklyn Bridge? Amazing! The 9/11 memorial? Worth the visit if you can handle it because it is very upsetting, whether you’re a New Yorker or not. I’m actually pleased you took the Staten Island Ferry. That’s where I’m from! And everyone I know refuses to go to Staten Island. As a commuter the ferry isn’t my favorite but on the weekend when I’m not in a rush to head home and I’m looking for something to do it’s a mode of transportation I appreciate. Come back down to Staten Island if you can to visit Snug Harbor and the Japanese Garden. A must! We also have some pretty good pizza but ours doesn’t compare to L&B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn.

  4. I also went to NYC this christmas it was absolutely a blast. And you are so right when you say everybody is surprisingly nice! 🙂 I also love the shape of the city, it has parks everywhere and you can just find and interesing place just around the corner.

I loved my trip just as much as you did. Next time I would like to visit another state, like Florida, for Disneyland. I’m going to write about it soon. Have a nice a day! 😀
